So you can probably tell by how little I update this that I am having a great time. After a brief night in Krabi we headed to a beach called Ton Sai, basically rockclimber paradise. It was fantastic, dusty and jungly, with really really fun people, and a quick walk to beautiful railey beach. We met a girl from Scotland, couple from New Zealand and two Canadians (one of whom stars in a disney show, so yes, I partied with a celebrity), who were just so much fun. The NZers taught us how to play rummy, and the Scot was quite the rockstar, jamming with the thai band that played at our favorite beach front bar. We spent our full moon party there, and though it was quite intimate", no where near the size of the Hat Rin party, we had a great time. After many drinks, I conspired with 1/2 of the NZ couple to pirate a bamboo raft to the fancy beach. Luckily for us, it was anchored, as that probably wouldn't have worked out and had a happy ending. Jenn and I also let loose a floating shrine to send away our bad luck for the year, as this party coincided with a big Buddhist festival. It seems to have worked, as the sun has been shining, we've been making all of our connections, and nothing has been stolen or broken.
After a few days on Ton Sai, we headed to Ko Lanta, a popular dive destination. I don't really dive, but Jenn had a great time, and snorkeling on Ko Phi Phi was pretty terrific. I saw lots of pretty fish, and it just made me really excited for my plans to attack the Barrier Reef when I get to Australia.
After Ko Lanta, we had to head back up to Bangkok to catch our flight to Phnom Pehn, via the night train. On the train, a young thai mom was having difficulty juggling her two kids, when one needed to use the bathroom. Before I knew it, she handed me her youngest to hang onto while she assisted the bathroom effort. Well, this little guy knew when he was being abandoned to a scary white woman, and promptly started to scream. All attempts to let him know it was only temporary, or to distract him, were futile. But as soon as he was back with mom, I gave him a cookie, so I feel like we kinda made up. Mom and I shared knowing smiles, it was one of the funniest interactions I have had with "locals".
In Bangkok, we ran around to try to get errands taken care of, with minimal success. We did meet a pair of French boys crossing the street, who magically managed to make us feel pretty after taking a night train and on day 2 or 3 of no shower. Only the french.... We made it to Cambodia without incident, and met up with Chris, my friend from highschool, who has been working for the phnom pehn post. He showed us a good time, introducing us to "Golden Muscle Liquor" made with deer antler, and claiming to help with rheumatism, physic, and mental state among other things, in hilariously confused english. Well, as Jenn can attest, it does none of these things. After a night of drinking and dancing, she was a bit worse for wear, and I got to go on an adventure to various pharmacies to find someone who knew the english word electrolyte". Chris also got me to come to a "house party" that turned into a "park party"and then to a night at a club, but I got to meet some incredibly friendly expats, who showed me a great time, and protected me with defensive dancing when some sketchy local boys wanted to dance. All in all, very very fun. Today we will thoroughly depress ourselves by going to S-21 and the Killing Fields, but we can recover with the beauty of Angkor Wat the next day!
