Yesterday Jenn and I got back from our tour of Halong Bay, which was so incredible, words don't do it justice. These cliffs covered in jungle, just rising out of the turquoise ocean, it was truly spectacular. And to see it both from a junk and up closed in a kayak was so special. I paddled out late in the afternoon by my self and just sat and tried to burn the image into my brain permanently so that I can The group we went with was a blast too, plenty of Canadians, a few Brits and Irish girls, an Aussie couple and a handful of Americans, we all bonded over the torture of cheap Hanoi Vodka, which I don't recommend. I could easily spends months in that special place... but we had to get back to continue our adventure! Tomorrow we sustain torture of a different sort: an 11 hour bus ride on winding mountain roads. Suffice it to say that I am not looking forward to it.
Hanoi has continued to charm and surprise. Last night spontaneity got a hold of us and we found ourselves at a concert for an Australian band call the Regurgitaters. It was loads of fun and quite exhausting. Starving after the show, I tried to find some beloved pho, instead was served some sort of chicken gruel that was pretty good. I didn't catch the name, as Jenn and I were the one white people and english speakers in the sidewalk joint. All and all a fun cultural experience. Today we will try to make it over to the Ho Chi Mihn Complex, though it closes early in the day (11am) and we have lots to get done- picking up our Lao visas and booking our bus tickets, and shopping!
My impressions of Vietnam are of course limited. I will always have the barrier of comparative wealth to protect me from some the realities of the place, but as far as visiting, I have really enjoyed my time, very glad I got to see some very special places that I will remember for a long time. Signing off, see you in Lao PDR!
